A Vietnam veteran and former Houston city employee won $5,000 on a Missouri Lottery Crossword Scratchers ticket. Ronald Barton bought the winning “$100,000 Crossword” ticket during a regular visit to Town & Country Supermarket, 1478 S. Sam Houston Blvd. in Houston, on Oct. 18.

“I bought it out of the machine at Town & Country,” Barton began. “We go in there every day to do something.”

The regular Lottery player said he frequently plays all of the games. He enjoys Lotto and Show Me Cash and has won prizes of $500 and $1,000 playing Scratchers. His largest win of $5,000 was something of a surprise.

“I counted enough words for $50,” recalled Barton. “I stopped at a Shell gas station and had the girl check it. It came up that I had to fill out paperwork. I said, ‘Fill out paperwork for $50? You better check that again!’”

The clerk happily told him that he won $5,000.

Barton, 64, said he would pay a bill and then sink most of the windfall into his “money pit.” He recently bought a 1964 Galaxy 500 that he is restoring.

Barton said he and his fiancé, Tbon Dobble, would continue playing the Lottery and having fun.

“I play every day,” admitted Dobble.

“We support the school system,” joked Barton.

$100,000 Crossword” is a $5 game that officially began June 6. The game features five top prizes of $100,000. To date, more than $5 million in prizes, including three top prizes, remain in the game. Track prizes remaining for any Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
